Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Look around the Internet long enough and you'll find enough Rock & Roll Hall of Fame "snubs" lists to total about 500 acts that supposedly should have been inducted already.
The truth is, not everyone is worthy. You could certainly make a case for the following seven artists. But I'm here to tell you not only are they not in the Rock Hall, they (probably) shouldn't be:
They're a popular band with a loyal fan base, but that doesn't necessarily earn you induction into the Rock Hall (Just ask Bon Jovi or Journey). But you could also make the case that Yes is essentially a one-hit wonder that doesn't have the greatest argument to one day make it into the museum. In terms of significance, the band's song "Owner of a Lonely Heart" is more well known than the group members are. And when it comes to influence in the progressive rock realm, the Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Jethro Tull and King Crimson may have better cases.
Electric Light Orchestra
I'm not surprised that ELO hasn't been nominated during its 20 years of eligibility. The band certainly isn't the lame Beatles knockoff some detractors claimed upon their arrival. But Jeff Lynne and company have to take a backseat in terms of Rock Hall induction to other progressive pop acts with wider influence such as Kraftwerk, Roxy Music or even Supertramp.
Alice in Chains
This was the hardest one to put on this list. It's a shame that Alice in Chains gets lumped in with grunge, because the band is one of the more substantial hard rock acts of its time, influencing future bands like Hoobastank, Godsmack and Staind. In case you're wondering, that list of bands doesn't help Alice in Chains' candidacy. Nor does the fact that the band's time with frontman Layne Stayley was cut short.
LL Cool J
LL Cool J was one of the first great solo stars in hip-hop. But his acting work and stint hosting the Grammys has made his legacy seem more Rock Hall worthy than it actually is. His longevity is impressive, but LL's debut album "Radio" remains his lone masterpiece. He didn't make quite the monumental statement as acts like N.W.A. or Public Enemy, and evolve as much as an artist like the Beastie Boys.
The Doobie Brothers
Highly successful during the 1970s and worthy of their induction into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Doobie Brothers fall short of being a Rock Hall snub. The band has a pretty solid collection of singles, but none of the Doobie Brothers' albums altered the history of rock in any way whatsoever.
Three Dog Night
I wouldn't call Three Dog Night a glorified cover band, but some people might. The band simply didn't write most of the huge hits its known for which, much like a handful of legendary crooners, should keep the "Joy to the World" boys out of the Rock Hall.
Tommy and the Shondells
Tommy James performing "Crimson and Clover" with Joan Jett during her recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction had some people thinking it's about time for James and the Shondells to work their way into the museum. But that performance is probably as close as they'll ever get. Singles like "Hanky Panky," "I think We're Alone" and the aforementioned "Crimson and Clover" are certainly noteworthy. Still, James doesn't have an essential album to write home about.
